History and Articles of the early Health & Strength magazines

By David Horne

Vol 1 history

I am on the lookout for any of the 12 issues from this volume, either a copy or better still an original. This volume is definitely titled Health & Strength and not as sometimes thought titled Physical Culture. I know this because of having a picture of one of the magazines from the first volume. This is in an advert in the Vol 2 No.12. May 1901 issue of Health & Strength, it shows on page 7 a picture of 5 front covers, including a 1d cover with Launceston Elliot pictured (4th pic from the left). This is definitely not a Volume 2 cover, as I have them all and the last 1d issue is July 1900. You would only know this if you had all of the volume 2 magazines with front covers on. As you can see from the picture it is definitely titled Health & Strength. I think it may say July 1899.

In the Vol 2 No.4. June 1900 issue of H&S it states the availability of this first volume, and also lists the articles in issues 3-12. Also mentioning that the front covers for issue 8 is ‘The Amateur Champion Weight-lifter’, issue 10 ‘The World’s Champion Indian Club Swinger’, and issue 12 ‘The Principal of Glasgow School of Physical Culture’.

It is very easy to see why the early copies are very rare to find, as they didn’t come out in large numbers and obviously most have been lost through time. [On page 14 of H&S Vol 2 No.3. May 1900, it states that the present circulation is 10,000, and that they are printing 12,000 for the June 1900 issue]. Even in the number one issue of volume 2 it stated that numbers 1 and 2 of the first volume were already out of print, although you could still get them in a bound volume for a little longer. By Vol 3 No.6. Dec 1901 there was now not even the usual file copy available of volume 1, and that 10 shillings was being offered in an advert for this volume (see below). This shows you how scarce it was even then.

Issues/months of volume 1 found in my research.
April; In Vol 2 No.1 March 1900 (page 10) it mentions that the ongoing serial “The Athlete’s Conquest” by MacFadden commenced in the April monthly.
August; In Vol 3 No.6. Dec 1901 in an advert (see below) for a new book by Henri Lawton on club swinging it stated that a biographical sketch with photo was published in the August number of Health and Strength in 1899. Maybe this issue may be the No.10 mentioned in the articles list of this first volumes articles, as one of the articles is ‘King of Clubs’ and has ‘The World’s Champion Indian Club Swinger’ on the cover.

I am very lucky to have the Health & Strength magazines featured below in my collection, and offer this info for the researcher/collector. Even the British Library’s holding only starts with Vol 2 No.10. [February] 1901.

I will soon be offering e-books of the issues below for a charge.
