1998 UK GRIP CONTESTS

8th British Grip Championships

Saturday 4 July, 1998

Venue: Stafford

Promoter: David Horne (In association with IAWA)

All weights in kilo's

This year’s contest took place at the same venue on the 4th of July, and the success of last year’s competition encouraged me to include another section: the Intermediate. The Open and Intermediate classes were close matches between fine athletes, and eight competed for the Novice Number One.

Happily, this turned out to be my fifth championship in a row, but it was nevertheless a very tough battle between myself and Nick McKinless right through to the end. A few mistakes knocked me back, and I was determined to rectify matters with a big Table Top Wrist Curl. Fortunately I did, and managed a record 300kg. Luckily for me, Nick’s Pinch Lift was also down, and the 13 points that separated us could easily have been much fewer.

In the Intermediate section, Elizabeth Talbot followed up the 1997 Championships with another win. Her 35kg One Hand Pinch Lift began the day well, and although she left a little behind in training on the next two events, it was well wrapped up with a fine 73kg Bear Hug Deadlift. Again not far behind, Dave Berry continued to play catch-up, pulling some great lifts (particularly his over double bodyweight 2-inch bar Deadlift), and arrived at a well-deserved second place.

The Novice section demonstrated some excellent competition, and seemed also to breed real comradeship. Taking first place was Dave Warrilow, wrist curling a big 185kg on the tabletop. The second spot went to twelve-year-old Jason Horne, who maintained his position well after his success on the first event with 25kg on the One Hand Pinch Lift. Roger Davis arrived at third place, pleased with his 37.5kg Pinch Lift, the biggest in the Novice section. Nick Swain enjoyed his excursion onto the Grip platform instead of the powerlifting contest. Lee Morrison and David Vass, both of whom accompanied me in lifting the largest Dinnie Stone, were fourth and sixth respectively: giving some kind of indicator of the quality of the Novice category!
