6th British Grip Championships
Saturday 3 February, 1996
Venue: Stafford
Promoter: David Horne (In association with IAWA)
All weights in kilo's
Once again the contest was held at Riverside Recreation Centre, Stafford, on the third of February 1996. Although only eight competitors participated this year, the standard of performance once again rose, perhaps demonstrating that the high class of entrants involved can take time to become accustomed to. Out of the eight, we saw a few grip championship veterans, and also a couple of very capable newcomers who were showing all the signs of become future stars. I was very pleased to earn my third consecutive title with a grand total of 477.25 points, thus equalling Steve Sherwood’s previous feat. My 7.05kg Weaver Stick Lift to the Rear was nearly joined in the record books by an 183kg Rim Lift, but my strength failed me and I was unable to finish the lift. David Elmer, again taking second place, flew through the events with a perfect twelve out of twelve, finishing with an impressive 81kg One Hand Deadlift on a 2-inch bar; 6kg above bodyweight. Following closely in third, had Peter Horne only managed to hold onto his third attempt of 76kg on the One Hand Deadlift on the 2-inch bar, he could perhaps have sneaked past David into second.
Finishing fourth in his first grip championships was Nick McKinless, a man I already believed to be very strong, and I was proven correct as I watched his 163kg Rim Lift and his fourth attempt of 89.5kg on the 2-inch bar One Hand Deadlift. Little did I realise just how much this individual would progress in the future, and how much of a challenge he would present to me. In her first competition, we also saw twelve-year-old Elizabeth Talbot showing great presence and strength for one so young: her 74kg Rim Lift would have put the average man on the street to shame.
