18 lifters participated in the 4th British Grip Championships on the 5th February 1994. The necessity of the lifting formula became apparent this year as the huge poundage differential between the Weaver Stick and the One Hand Vertical Bar was nullified.
An enormous amount of hard training and determination by myself, and 12 successful lifts out of 12, produced a winning overall score of 575 points (87 points more than David Elmer in second). Despite an illness prior to the competition, which reduced my bodyweight to a meagre 85kg, I still managed world-record breaking lifts of a 60kg One Hand Pinch Lift and a 203kg One Hand Vertical Bar Lift. With a superb set of 12 out of 12 lifts and
a 163kg One Hand Vertical Bar Lift, David Elmer secured himself second position. Ironically, David’s performance broke no records on the day, for the simple reason that he already held them all! Chris Moore improved by one position from last year, moving up to third and breaking his world record in the Weaver Stick with 5.35kg in the process. Bob Howe finished two places higher than last year in fourth position, producing the biggest Middle Fingers Clean and Press of 80kg. Those who were present will surely agree with me in saying that Bob’s manner of getting on and off the stage in the shortest time possible is quite unique. The strength of the field in this year’s event was astounding, with the likes of Steve Sherwood, Frank Allen and Peter Horne outside the top five.
