1993 UK GRIP CONTESTS

3rd Goerner Grip Championships (British Grip Championships)

Saturday 6 February, 1993

Venue: Stafford

Promoter: David Horne (In association with IAWA)

All weights in kilo's

On 6th February 1993, the 3rd British Grip Championships was held, again at Stafford. This year’s effort to identify the best all-round ‘gripper’ was slightly different, however. Each event was given a formula score, similar to the decathlon in athletics; this renders every lift of equal importance. The final lift for every event is multiplied by the appropriate formula score and the bodyweight and age formulae. The four final scores of the events add up to give the final amended total. This has enabled lifters to compete on an equal basis regardless of their bodyweight or age.

Unaffected by this new method of scoring, Steve Sherwood again lifted the title of British Grip Champion, producing excellent results with the 2” thick bar. An unfortunate hip injury prevented me from pulling any significant poundages on the last two events, but after a good year of Pinch Lift training I was nevertheless pleased with an overall second position. Fellow Staffordian John Moore attained third position, finishing with the hoisting of two 120kg dumbbells.
Chris Moore finished seven points behind his brother in fourth position, and was only 7.5kg away from achieving a three times bodyweight Dumbbells Deadlift! Steve Angell’s easy 250kg Dumbbells Deadlift more than excused his unfortunate performance on the 2” bar Deadlift, and the Buckingham powerlifter enjoyed an exciting debut.
Bob Howe’s first performance in the British Grip Championships was perhaps somewhat marred by the painful experience of dropping a 125kg dumbbell on his foot, but he was nonetheless happy with his ultimate sixth position. Bob’s main concern, however, was the threat of missing last orders at the pub if he were to be checked out at the hospital!
