1992 UK GRIP CONTESTS

2nd Goerner Grip Championships (British Grip Championships)

Saturday 8 February, 1992

Venue: Stafford

Promoter: David Horne (In association with IAWA)

All weights in kilo's

The 2nd British Grip Championships took place on the 8th of February 1992, with a permanent change of venue; only 13 lifters braved this year’s painful contest held in Stafford in the Midlands. Of these participants, only 1 was female: Wendy Samways, who increased her previous Middle Fingers Deadlift by 15kg, managing a massive 80kg on her fourth attempt, and taking ninth position overall. An increase in poundages across the board is seen almost every year, as the lifters learn what it is to train and compete in this event, and their skin and muscles harden and strengthen.

Again, Steve Sherwood rose above the rest as he pushed the barriers on finger lifting, with a Middle Fingers Deadlift of 14kg above double bodyweight! Similarly, Frank Allen maintained his second position from last year, and the fifty-year-old cleared a 135kg right arm Zercher, being beaten only by Graham Saxton’s 140kg in this event. The One Arm Zercher is painfully performed by lifting a barbell onto the knees in a squatting position, then gripping the centre of the bar in the crook of the elbow, then standing fully erect. This event is a great test of elbow and back strength, and also the cause of hundreds of blood blisters! Too far adrift after mistakes in the first two events, I secured third position with my 155kg Middle Fingers Deadlift. In order to creep up to second, I needed a massive 195kg lift, but after having pulled the bar to close to erect, I found the knurling dragging on my thighs, and my failure left me holding a bronze trophy at the end of the day. Nineteen-year-old Paul Crooks finished fourth with a 7kg over bodyweight Pinch Lift. Our heaviest competitor of the day, Steve Gardner, performed the heaviest successful lift of 160kg on the Middle Fingers Deadlift on his fourth attempt; bettering himself by 35kg since last year.
